Going back to school later in life can be tough, between juggling children at home and a day job on top of classes.
“We think some of the biggest hurdles for adult learners is balancing life,” said Michelle Harris, director of engagement and marketing at Haywood Community College.
So HCC is getting creative to reduce those barriers with a suite of new initiatives — from take-home meal kits to a study lounge where parents can bring their kids along while they do classwork.
“Returning to the classroom can be a little daunting, so the resources, such as our dedicated success coaches to support them from start to finish, have been reassuring, because these students can focus in and work with one person through their entire process, which is very helpful,” Harris said.
HCC is one of five colleges that are part of the N.C. Reconnect program, receiving$125,000 from the John M. Belk endowment fund to enhance outreach and support for adult learners returning to school.
In addition to supporting returning students, the fund has also boosted the college enrollment, bringing in 50 new students this semester — both full-time and part-time. Growing enrollment following a Covid decline has been a top focus of HCC.

A portion of the funds were used to establish the new Reconnect Center, a dedicated work space where parents can bring their kids along.
“We’re realizing that you’re not just welcoming a student to campus, you’re welcoming their entire family,” Harris said. “It’s an adjustment for the whole family to understand that that student needs dedicated time to work on homework or attend classes. So when the family comes to campus, and as part of that admissions process, we want to make them feel welcome and included as well.”
The school also offers ‘meal kits’ for students pressed for time — a quick dinner option so they can focus on their studies.
To make re-entry into school an easier transition, HCC ambassadors — called InsideTrack coaches — will provide guidance, resource and direction on any questions or issues that arise. For those with after-hours questions there’s a new chatbot on HCC’s website, plus a live chat option where HCC staff are on deck to provide answers in real time.
Additionally, funds from NC reconnect can expunge outstanding balances former students may discover upon their return to school.
